THE SUN TILTED west over the pines as I drove Mr. Jinks back to my hotel. It was a warm, dusty afternoon, and I was tired.

“Did you enjoy your morning, Mr. Jinks?” I asked. “We kept Miss Eldridge longer than you probably expected.”

“It only took one cup of coffee to brace me up,” he said. “I gave myself a little tour while I waited. Wandered the stable and walked around the meadow some.” He folded his arms. “Did you know there’s a 1910 Overland parked behind the barn?”

“So I’ve heard. Dr. Peele owns it. He drove up with Dr. Webb.”

“It’s a beautiful machine. Expensive. I may have climbed into it and gone through all the compartments.”

I glanced at him.

“Nothing on it I can find,” he said. “I made small talk with the stable boys. They’re getting ready to reconfigure the stable and turn half of it into a garage for autos. I guess it’s the new thing, but the boys aren’t happy about it. After seeing Mr. Lindley’s white horses, I can’t blame them.”

“He did tell me there were big projects going here while they were away on their wedding trip.”

“And you?” he asked. “Did you find anything?”

“I paid a visit to Dr. Webb’s and Dr. Peele’s rooms.” I turned the buggy into the final bend. “They both have enough medication to drop a horse. And I found the other two rosary beads.”

Mr. Jinks turned to face me fully.

“They were in Dr. Webb’s room. And I watched Mrs. Bradley take them.” I walked the mare slowly toward the blacksmith shop and Carlos stepped out to meet us. “But I don’t know why and I have no proof that either of them did anything to Miss Atherton.”

Mr. Jinks kept his thoughts to himself as Carlos took the bridle, and we both turned to get out of the buggy.

I still wasn’t sure what to think about the note in Dr. Webb’s room.

The clank of iron against iron came from the side of the blacksmith shop, instead of from inside of it. I looked at Carlos and he tipped his head toward the sheriff’s office. Between the two buildings, Tex and Mack were pitching horseshoes.

“You spend all your time over there,” Carlos said. “Blue is missing you.”

I joined Mr. Jinks on the boardwalk, and he and Carlos sized each other up before Carlos gave the mare a pat on the neck. The other horses in the corral behind the blacksmith shop heard our approach and were restlessly waiting at the gate for Carlos to arrive with their friend.

“She gets apples and an apology every night,” I said, brushing at my skirt. “There’s nothing to be jealous about. As soon as the wedding is over, I’ll have nothing to do but take long, lovely rides every day.”

Carlos led the mare and buggy away and I said, more for my benefit than his, “Poor Blue. She’s sulking but there’s no time for her yet.” I led Mr. Jinks toward the hotel. “We’re having company.”
